Federal Sportsfishing Excise Tax
You will probably hear mention something about an Federal Excise Tax that I have to collect when discussing price and invoice. You'll probably wonder what the hect is that? Not many of us enjoying paying taxes, this is one case where you can be sure where your tax money is going and what it's being used for. Every time you buy fishing tackle a small portion (10%) of the purchase price goes into the Federal Sport Fish Restoration Fund (Dingle-Johnson). The money, over $404 million in 2009, is administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and is distributed to all states for sport fish restoration projects. You can go to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service web site and check on the money that your state receives.
